SEASON 2: Forms of Substance
- 19 Ağu 2024
- 4 dakikada okunur
Güncelleme tarihi: 21 Eyl 2024
Başlık: Introduction to the Season Konuşmacı: Begüm Güven 13.08.2022

Oὐσία: which is one’s own, one’s substance or property
substansia: being, essence,essential nature
Μορφή: form, shape,
form: shape, image, appropriate way of doing something
How does a thing gain its identity, become distinguishable from other things? Does the fact that it takes such a form, affect its identity, its essence? If it is such that form and essence are in constant interaction, how is it such that we are able to pause the becoming and have as appearances immobile things? This saturday at 18.30 Begüm will have an introductory discussion where she explicates the dilemma she has on the subject.
2. Başlık: Mind and Body Separation Konuşmacı: Sezen Yatarkalkmaz
20.08.2022
When we think of mind and body, there is a separation between the two. Starting from Aristo, we can look at the history of perspectives trying to give meaning to them. Once we take into account a couple of these, we can then ask several other questions. “Why is there a duality?”, sits on top floor, but we can also ask about the relationship of mind and body, whether one is in charge of other, whether one gives form to the other, if there is a queer reading of these ideas in our minds, or we can ask “are they really separate”? Starting with a performance by Barış, we’re going to remember our bodies, and we will try to make sense of these questions, using Form and Substance(Essence) as our guide through these discussions.
3. Başlık: Research on Simondon Konuşmacı: Yağmur Denizhan Extra: Mert Eryılmaz

Hello everyone, this week Saturday at the usual hour we have Prof. Yağmur Denizhan as our guest. She will be discussing her newest research and writings that are in relation to our umbrella topic Formae Substantiae.
this saturday after prof. yağmur denizhan's discussion i'll be showing you 2 films that takes the way how we (we?) interract with the world in an overly sophisticated aesthetic. these films are those i met when my interest towards experimental films was just beginning. it's of no importance but they are more easily available on the internet than those we watched last year at saturdays but I recommend not to investigate them so much before the screenings.

brouillard #14, alexandre larose, 2013, 10 min.

impressions, jacques perconte, 2012, 48 min.

Hello dear friends, this week we will have the continuation of last week with Prof. Yağmur Denizhan in elaboration of the topic of Analogue and Digital, Saturday at the usual hour. The event afterwards will be a musical appreciation, the details of which will be announced.
Hello all, on Saturday after Prof. Yağmur's presentation, at about 9 or 10 pm we are going to listen to Mahler's 2nd "Ressurection" Symphony and perhaps have a short discussion afterwards. I am excited about sharing 90 minutes of just listening in silence to something beautiful with all who would like to join.
5. Başlık: A Painting of Reverence in Time
Konuşmacı: Berk Kurt
10.09.2022

This saturday, two works are going to be presented, both of them dwell in the audiovisual medium. The longer one (16’12’’), picture of which you see here does not have a name but is named with the ornament of the endless knot used in the Indus Valley region from 2500BC. The second work is named A Painting of Reverence in Time (3’16’’). Additionally, as a ground for our event, a third work is presented here in PDF format, which aims to set a ground of mentality. It is self explanatory so I do not feel the need to dwell on its contents here, you can interact with it as you like. But I do again feel the need to remark that all the works presented here are in deep contact with Formae Substantiae.
As I was preparing for the event there emerged a theme to it. There will be presentation of works which will be followed by a presentation on Necessity and Nature, thereon a reflective event on Max Richter's Sleep. The theme of the things that we will encounter require a further reading. Here I share it so that you can look back to it after the event.

Hi Forms of Substance people 🌵
As we arrive at the last week of our theme, I will once again take the stage to close up on what we have discussed. Some of you will remember that my opening presentation was not grounded on any philosopher, or idea, and instead it was an attempt to discuss what is form and what is essence without any preliminary expectations. Instead, this week, we will focus on the debate between Spinoza and Leibniz, and investigate two contrary metaphysics, or ways of understanding the world. What I like about both of them is that the question "what exists" in their theories, comes to include all domains of existence, from freedom to ethics and to history (hence Ethics of Spinoza as a metaphysics manuscript). I will do my best to cover their most important arguments during the presentation and hopefully we will see some strong models delving with our dear question: Forms, essences and substances.
See you at 19.00 ❤️
